In creating a metaphor, you first of all need to know what is the current situation or problem and what the person wants instead. All techniques we use in NLP start with a well formed outcome – if you don’t know what you want you could end up with anything!
Once you know what you want and where you are starting from, we can then create a journey in a metaphor that can help someone create their desired state.
Metaphors can be shallow or deep. A shallow metaphor, or overt metaphor is where the meaning is obvious to the conscious mind and could be used to motivate, inspire or change people’s state.
A deep metaphor works at an unconscious level and helps people to access the unconscious resources that someone needs to make the change they want.
Deep metaphors can be extremely effective in therapeutic settings.
