Hypnosis Therapy

What to expect in a hypnotherapy session...

When you go to see a hypnotherapist, many people expect that they are going to be 'put under' some sort of state where the therapist will tell them what to do and they will come out being 'reprogrammed'. For most people, this is far from the reality. In fact, hypnosis is really a state of co-operation between the client and therapist, where the client simply follows the directions given by the therapist and then goes into a very relaxed state where they can discover ways to achieve their outcomes.

In fact many people describe hypnosis as a state of deep relaxation and are surprised when they find out they were aware of everything that happened and had complete control throughout the session. This can be surprising to some people because many people simply have experienced hypnosis from watching stage shows where the volunteers appear to do anything that they are told. However when you go to see a hypnotherapist, you will likely discover that it is a very soothing, relaxing and empowering experience where you discover new levels of control over your own mind and emotions.

Will you have to watch the watch???

So will you have to watch a hypnotherapist swinging a pocket watch as you go into hypnosis, like in the old movies?

Most hypnotherapists do not use a watch to help someone go into trance. Some hypnotherapists favor a more authoritarian style where they tell you quite directly what to do, whereas other approaches are more indirect where the therapist may start telling stories and you find yourself relaxing deeply just by listening to them. Different approaches work better for different people and also for what they want to achieve. Often you may be asked to concentrate on a spot on the wall as the hypnotherapist guides you into the state of hypnosis.

Can hypnotherapy help you?

I believe that anyone can benefit from hypnotherapy, even if is learning to relax more deeply. Hypnosis has been found to be one of the most effective methods for dealing with issues such as smoking and assisting weight management, as well as being very effective in clinical settings for pain management.

One of the first clients I ever had for hypnotherapy (over 14 years ago) said that after just a couple of sessions felt more confident and better about herself than she ever had in her entire life.
