Choosing an NLP Training

Choosing the right NLP training can be a challenge because there are so many companies now offering NLP. Several years ago there were only a few organisations offering NLP training and over the last few years popularity has increased rapidly throughout the UK. Standards of Neuro Linguistic Programming training do vary vastly as do the experience of the trainers - if you are about to embark on learning some of the most effective techniques for taking control of your mind and emotions, choosing an experienced trainer is essential to give you confidence in your learning.

How do you select the right training for you?

NLP trainings are not all the same. NLP courses can vary not only in content, duration, and cost, but also the quality of training can vary substantially. We frequently have people asking to redo their training with us because they had trained with another organisation and were not happy with the course.

With so many trainings available many people choose trainings that are local to them, are low cost or just on the basis of whether the dates are convenient. If you are investing your time, energy and money into an NLP course, making a choice of NLP provider on these factors could lead to disappointment.

When choosing a training do you want to choose the best course - if so, then these are a few points to consider...

  • How much experience does the trainer have? Recently NLP has become very commercial and many people are doing rapid trainings and may even become a trainer in less than a year. Would you want to train with someone who has very little experience themselves in NLP?
  • Find out about the experience of the trainer before starting a course.
  • What organisations are they members of? There are many different Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) organisations around, many of which are often indirectly connected to training organisations and may be more of a marketing tool than a register committed to high standards.
  • INLPTA is the world's only independent trainer's association committed to upholding high standards in NLP. Training with an INLPTA certified trainer is a good indication that you are training with someone who is committed to high standards. When you find out about the organisations the trainer belongs to, check out the organisation as well.
  • There are American organisations and British organisations which are more commercially oriented rather than having high standards - does the organisation have a syllabus/standards to be maintained? Is the organisation set up by people who run their own training company with their own agendas?
  • Does the training offer lots of certifications in a short training? There are many 7 day courses which also offer certification in Hypnosis and Time Line. Would you want to go to a hypnotherapist who had only done one day's training in hypnosis? NLP courses used to all be at least 15 days long, so offering lots of certifications on a short training might sound like a great incentive, however even with home study before a training there will be core areas that are left out of the course. If you want quality rather than quantity, then be prepared to invest more time in different certifications.
  • We offer a separate training in hypnotherapy lasting for 6 days leading to certification as a hypnotherapist accredited by the General Hypnotherapy Standards Council, the main British Hypnosis accreditation organisation. Shorter hypnosis trainings are often only resognised by American organisations, some of which you could join just after reading a book on hypnosis. With our training you receive a well respected certification.
  • How large are the class sizes? Some NLP trainings have huge numbers of students on them. A class size of about 20 allows good interaction between trainer and students, however 60 or more students can become more of a show than a training. Large trainings may have lots of assistants who have attended the trainings themselves, however the advantage of smaller groups is that you can interact with the trainer who should have a great deal more experience than assistants
  • Be prepared to travel for the right course. Just because the training is convenient, it may not be the best course. Several people have attended our trainings after being disillusioned about NLP on another training. If you can attend a training with an INLPTA certified Master Trainer of NLP, this is a good way to know that your trainer is highly experience and you should get the best experience out of your training.
  • The highest quality NLP training companies may only offer a few trainings each year. In order to be delivering the most up to date and highest quality training, experienced trainers would struggle to offer Practitioner Trainings every month because they also need to be involved in development. So be wary of companies that offer lots of Practitioner Trainings throughout the year - although they may fit in with your schedule you may want to question whether the quality can be maintained with such a busy schedule. Learning NLP is different from learning skills like IT - it is about learning some of the most advanced principles for transformation available so choose your trainer carefully
